Sometimes our mail comes late. With the days being short during the winter months I often end up taking a trek down the long driveway to my mailbox after dark.
One night I walked out my front door with a flashlight secured in one hand and the other clutching my coat trying to ward off the chill. I swept the beam of light across the sidewalk causing shimmering sparkles to bounce off the ground. It was cold.
As I got about halfway to the mailbox I looked up and stopped in my tracks. The immense expanse of the dark clear sky was decorated with thousands and thousands of bright shining stars. A twisting band of fuzzy whiteness stretching from the North to the South showing off its billions of starlight that shined from miles away making up the Milky Way.
Absentmindedly I turned off the flashlight and laid down on the driveway to drink in this awe wondering site I was beholding. With my hand I started pointing out the different constellations that I knew. Orion’s belt, the Big Dipper and Leo the Lion. Then to top it off I caught site of a streak of light that shot across the sky before disappearing into nothing.
I must have laid there for about ten minutes marveling at the beauty of the night sky. No Big Bang could even come close to taking credit for this? Our universe just didn’t happen because the infinite density and temperature was right causing matter and energy to converge together to create a universe. No. This required a bigger and greater presence who has infinite power and all-knowing wisdom.
He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed. – Albert Einstein
The mysteries of this world continue to draw me in creating curiosity and wonder at how all of this came to be. The rain that falls from laden dark clouds wetting the earth. The snowflakes each unique in its own design. The birth of new life from its mother’s womb. The oxygen we breathe in that keeps us alive only to have plants absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale to live.
The simple act of a mother neutering her child, or a Fathers instinct to protect. The human instinct that propels us to reach high and far to become better and more knowledgeable. The courage and strength placed in us to fight for what we believe in.
What is sacred is what is worthy of our reverence, what evokes awe and wonder in the human heart, and what, when contemplated, transforms us utterly. – Phil Cousineau
May I never lose my wonder. May I see like a child wide eyed and mystified who is awe struck staring at the beauty around me and within me.
I can see Gods fingerprints all over where His artwork and creation are displayed. There is no patent needed since no one or anything can even come close to replicating His masterpieces.
In the original language, ‘Fear the Lord’ doesn’t mean be afraid. It means sustaining a joyful, astonished awe, and wonder before Him. – Timothy Keller
Allow yourself to daily be awestruck and full of wonder of the many mysteries that surround you on this earth and in your life. Teach your children how to revere and how to sense wonder and awe.
Thank you, Lord, for creating such a beautiful universe where Earth turns on its axel allowing life to exist on its surface. Grant me many moments of awe and wonder of the beauty and mysteries around me to remind me of your greatness.
Psalm 33:8 ESV – Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
